FAQ
Common questions
Straight answers about the estimator, drawings, materials, and what happens after you ask for a quote: the deposit, the balance and collection.
In every estimate
- Setup
- $82.50
- incl. GST ($75 + GST), once per job
- Job minimum
- $165
- incl. GST ($150 + GST), includes the setup
- GST
- 10%
- shown separately
The minimum replaces the total when parts plus setup come to less. It is never added on top.
Estimates and prices
What the online estimate includes and how the total is worked out.
Is this a final quote?
No. The estimator gives an indicative price for material and cutting, worked out from the details you enter. The final price, and whether the part can be made as drawn, are confirmed in a formal quote after we review your drawing.
An estimate is not an offer or an order, and nothing on this website takes payment.
How is the estimate worked out?
Each part is priced from three things: the material it uses (its net area, in the grade and thickness you choose), the length of the cut, and the number of pierces, which is one for each outline and each hole. The price of one part is rounded to the cent, then multiplied by the quantity.
The job then gets one setup charge of $82.50 including GST ($75 + GST), the job minimum if it applies, and GST. Every line is shown, so you can follow the arithmetic. Estimates, quotes and payment sets it out in full, with worked examples.
Why is there a minimum job price?
A job carries a fixed amount of work however small it is, so the minimum charge for a job is $165 including GST ($150 excluding GST). That minimum already includes the one setup charge of $82.50 including GST ($75 + GST); it is not added on top of it, and it is not charged per part.
If your parts plus setup come to less than $150 ex GST, the estimate shows a minimum adjustment that brings the job up to the minimum. Once parts plus setup pass it, no adjustment applies. On a small job, adding more parts to the same job can cost little or nothing extra until the total passes the minimum.
Does the estimate include GST?
Yes. The estimate shows the total excluding GST, the GST at 10%, and the total including GST. The large figure at the top of the result is the total including GST.
Can I estimate several parts in one job?
Yes. Add each different part as its own line, with its own material, thickness and quantity. The whole job shares one setup charge and one minimum, and you see a single job total.
If one part is unfinished or needs a reviewed quote, the job total waits until you complete or remove that part, so you never see a total that leaves something out.
Does an estimate hold a price or reserve anything?
No. An estimate uses the rates in the estimator on the day you use it, and rates can change. It does not reserve material, stock, machine time or a production slot. Your formal quote states its own price and how long it is open.
Is anything I type into the estimator sent to you?
No. The estimator works out the price in your browser, and what you enter stays on your device unless you choose to send it to us, by email or with the quick enquiry form. See the privacy page.
Drawings and files
When you need a drawing, and how to send one.
Do I need a drawing to get an estimate?
Not for simple parts. Rectangles, discs and rings, with or without round holes, are priced straight from their dimensions. If you already know a part's net area, cut length and number of pierces from your CAD software, you can enter those instead, and a DXF file can be measured on your own device.
For the formal quote, a drawing lets us check the exact shape, holes and features, so for anything more complex than a simple shape, email the drawing.
Can I send a drawing?
Yes. Email it to quotes@xtremelaser.com.au and attach the file in your own email app. Send it in the format you have (a DXF or a dimensioned PDF is ideal) and we will confirm what we can use. If you do not have a CAD file, a clearly dimensioned sketch is a good place to start.
This website has no file upload, so your files go straight from your email to ours.
Can the estimator read my DXF file?
Yes. If you have a DXF file, the estimator can measure it for you on your own device: the file is read in your browser and nothing is uploaded. It works out the net area, cut length and pierces for the estimate. Choose Custom shape, then Choose a DXF file. It reads ASCII DXF files drawn with lines, arcs, circles and polylines; text, dimensions, splines and blocks need to be on a layer you leave out.
If the file does not say which units it was drawn in, you choose them; nothing is assumed. If a drawing has something that cannot be measured reliably, such as an open outline or lines drawn twice, the estimator says so and suggests emailing the drawing instead of guessing a price.
What should I put in my email?
- The material, grade and thickness
- The quantity of each part
- Your drawing attached, or the dimensions written out
- Any critical dimensions, fits or tolerances, and what the part is for if that matters
- When you need the parts
If you used the estimator, include its summary: it already lists every part, dimension and quantity. The Email this estimate button in the estimator writes it into a new email for you.
Will you check my drawing?
We review it to prepare the formal quote, and we may ask questions. We make the parts to the drawing and specification in the quote you accept, so please check it, and mark any critical dimensions, fits or tolerances, before you accept. We may decline a part we cannot make safely or reliably.
Who owns my drawings?
You do. We use the drawings and files you send only to quote for and make your job, and we do not claim ownership of them. Please send only files you own or have permission to use.
Materials, sizes and finishing
What the estimator covers, and what is confirmed on your quote.
What materials and grades can you cut?
The online estimator covers mild steel (Grades 250, 300 and 350), stainless steel (304 and 316) and aluminium (5005, 5052, 5083 and 6061), in the thicknesses listed on the materials page. Availability of a particular grade and thickness is confirmed with your formal quote.
For other metals, for example galvanised steel, weathering steel (Corten) or stainless 430, email quotes@xtremelaser.com.au and ask.
What is the largest part, or the thickest plate, you can cut?
The machine's nominal work area is 3000 × 1500 mm. That is a nominal figure for the machine, not a promise for every part: the practical size depends on the part, the material and the edge allowance, and it is confirmed when we review your drawing.
The online estimator covers sheet from 1 to 16 mm thick, depending on the material and grade. Those are the thicknesses it prices online; for anything else, email us. See capabilities for more.
What tolerances can you hold?
That depends on the material, the thickness and the feature, so we do not publish one figure for every job. If a dimension matters, mark it on your drawing and mention it in your email, and we will confirm what is achievable in the formal quote.
Can I supply my own material?
Ask in your email. Tell us the material, grade, thickness and sheet size you have, and we will confirm with the quote whether we can cut it. Material you supply, and the parts cut from it, stay yours.
Do you help with drawings, bending, welding or powder coating?
The estimator prices cutting only. Drawing preparation, bending, welding, finishing and other operations are not included in an estimate. If your job needs any of them, tell us when you email and we will let you know whether we can help.
Quotes, payment and collection
What happens after you ask for a formal quote. Collection only.
How do I get a formal quote?
Email your drawing to quotes@xtremelaser.com.au with the material, thickness and quantity. If you have used the estimator, the Email this estimate button starts that email for you with a summary of the parts; attach your drawing and press Send. We review the drawing and reply with a formal written quote, which states the price, the deposit and the collection arrangements.
No drawing yet? The Send a quick enquiry button under the estimate sends us your estimate summary and a short message as text. There is no file upload, so email the drawing when you have it.
How do I place an order?
By accepting your formal quote in writing, as the quote explains. The website itself does not take orders or payments, and nothing is payable until you accept a quote.
Do I pay a deposit?
Yes. Once you accept the formal quote, the deposit stated in your formal quote is payable before production starts. Your quote states the amount and how to pay.
When do I pay the rest?
When your parts are ready. The remaining balance must be paid in full, and the payment must have cleared, before the parts are released for collection.
Do you deliver?
No. Collection only: we do not deliver or arrange freight. The collection location is confirmed in your formal quote or our order correspondence. We let you know when your parts are ready to collect.
How long will my parts take?
That depends on the job, so the timing is confirmed with your formal quote. If you need the parts by a particular date, put it in your email.
Changes, cancellations and problems
If your plans change, or something is wrong with your parts.
Can I change a job after accepting the quote?
Ask us as soon as you can. Changes to an accepted job are agreed in writing, usually with a revised quote, and can change the price or timing. Once parts have been cut, some changes may not be possible. We do not change an accepted job without your agreement.
What if I need to cancel?
Before you accept a formal quote, there is nothing to cancel and nothing to pay. If you cancel after accepting, for your own reasons, tell us in writing straight away: we refund your deposit less the reasonable costs we have actually incurred for your job, such as material bought or cut for it and work already done. If those costs are more than the deposit, we may ask you to pay the difference. There is no other cancellation fee.
If you cancel because we have not done what we agreed, your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply instead, and we do not deduct our costs. If we cannot make your job, we refund everything you paid for parts or work we have not supplied. See changes and cancellations.
Can I return parts if I change my mind?
Parts are made to order, so we do not give refunds for a simple change of mind. That does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law if there is a problem with the parts or our work.
What if there is a problem with my parts?
Email info@xtremelaser.com.au with your quote reference, what is wrong and photos if they help. Our goods and services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For a major failure you can choose a refund or a replacement (or compensation for the drop in value). For a failure that is not major, we can choose to repair, replace or refund within a reasonable time. You can also claim compensation for other reasonably foreseeable loss.
Please check your parts when you collect them; that request does not limit your rights. See your rights in full.
